I used to fly kites when I was a kid and slowly I stopped I always wanted to but something or even my own lazyness I didn’t fly them for years now when I want to do it again I see no kites in the sky it is one of the best thing from my childhood and now it’s gone.

The government should organize a Kite Flying Competition or Kite Festival during Dashain to preserve and promote this tradition for locals and foreigners. An annual competition encourages people to practice beforehand and also pass the tradition down to youngsters as well.

My part of Kathmandu was Changa crazed. Kids were so into it they would start flying as soon as Jeth started and fly them way past Dashain into Mangshir.
Then men in my family were Changa crazed too. My dad, a frugal man for most of the year, would go to the local kite store and buy the most expensive Dhago come Asoj. Back in 1997 he bought this massive lattai. It broke apart a few times through the years but each time he lovingly restored it. Once he bought almost 8 km of Dhago that lasted him (and me) two years and a lot of kite bouts. Sadly, in a personal sign of the end of kite-flying culture, the lattai now hangs on his living room wall.
My uncle would tell me stories about chasing Chet kites through the fields of baneshwor back in the day and about how once he landed in a sinsnu ghari. He was a bit of a trouble maker. He loved to steal other people’s Dhago and Changa. He would either use a tall beam we had left over from the construction of our house, or he would tie a string to a small stone. Once some boys got pissed and came to fight with him about it. He scared them off with that beam.
My best friend at the time was a kite flying savant. Guy could cut the other fighter’s kite with any quality of string at his disposal. And usually he would catch the other kite after making it Chet (so long ago, I forget the Nepali word for this). Once he and my dad got into a kite fighting bout that lasted a long time, and my dad ended up losing. He also lost about a km worth of his expensive Dhago.
About two days ago, a father and his kid were trying and failing to fly a kite where I live. It kept leaning to one side. I really wanted to go check the kakka of their kite and tell them that they needed a gwakh.
Au na ta udam. Timi udau ani ma lattai samatchhu.
I have vivid memories of those days, 2006-2009. Samakhusi ko galli ma changa udako.. i was about 8,9 teti bela. Paisa chorera lattai kineko.. ani pachi pitai khako… oh bro your post made me nostalgic. I wish I could go back in time to relive those moments.
