Is this a real problem? Or made up scenario? If I can afford to maintain my vehicle, I wouldn’t care as long as they are my close friends or family members and it’s not being extra burden. Everything in life is not debit and credit bro/sis.

Joint account for joint expenses. There you go best option. But still in your case it doesn’t seem like you’re going out of your way to drop your wife and you’re going to the office anyway. So your vehicle expenses would be the same even if you were alone so just ask if she wants to chip in. It’s not a should or shouldn’t question. Cause if she says she won’t. What would you do? Stay home and save on the vehicle expenses?
But yeah you guys really should have a joint account so you don’t have to have these conversations in the first place.
