Fixation on higher education

Fixation on higher education

Idk why nepali society is so fixated on higher education, or is it just my family. In my case, I did a bachelor’s degree from the USA and am currently working full time for a company earning good money with a clear career path by passing more professional exams(actuarial career path if anyone is curious). When I said I got a job everyone in Nepal kind of seemed disappointed and said ‘ahile Kam garyo bhane pachi padhna man lagdaina’ and all that. If having a bachelor’s in a field, in which masters or even a PhD is redundant, is enough then idk why everyone is so fixated on me getting a PhD. I have gone back to Nepal two times during my four years and everyone said Kam garne haina enroll in master’s or PhD. “Esto ramro padhne manche kina padhai chodnu paryo” and all that. I’m sure that hard sciences like Biology, Chemistry, etc require a PhD for research purposes but for technical fields like IT, Software Engineering, Data Science (my field is linked with all these) I don’t know if masters degree is a good step. Maybe a good stepping stone if you have a bachelor’s from Nepal and want to go to a different country for education, then going for a master’s might be good to know about the country and have a better chance of getting a job by being that particular country’s graduate. But everyone is disappointed that I’m not doing a PhD, so much so that I’m considering going out of my way and doing a useless part time online university for a masters degree just to silence everyone.

The people in the USA are quite the opposite so much so that some people even consider bachelor’s degree redundant unless you’re trying to follow a career path that specifically requires a degree like Doctor, Lawyer, etc.

  1. I have the same issue. I completed my bachelor in CSIT last year and I have full time job in good company . Everyone is telling me to quit the job and study master’s. They say these stupid things like I won’t get promotion, I won’t get good opportunities in future. They act like they know everything. My company doesn’t even care about degree in fact I haven’t even submitted my transcript. Its mainly my relatives who are telling me to study. Probably they are jealous I am earning good in young age. Stupid people!

  2. It is because there are job opportunities in developed countries for those without a Degree.

Within Nepal there are very little jobs available here, whilst the Universities have become Degree Mills, churning out fresh graduates that are taught in decade old syllabus and rote learning.

Not to say this doesn’t happen in the West, but at least their Degree Certification will be recognised around the world at the end, whilst Nepali degrees are not worth the paper they’re written on.

Then there is also the component of Casteism, which feeds into the belief those doing manual labour or in “dirty trades”, are somehow fundamentally subhuman and servile.

*How are you supposed to train Apprentices to make Steel, if no one wants to be associated as a “Kami”?*

This is one area of Nepali Society that is fundamentally abhorrent and keeping us backward, and it won’t be fixed unless we embrace Westernisation of Industrial Class relations.
