Carfree Hadigaon Revives Neighborhood Identity, People & Culture

On World Carfree Day 2023, the Hadigaun neighborhood in Kathmandu celebrated a new beginning with its first-ever carfree initiative. Organized by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office, Hadigaun Ward 5, and driven by community involvement, this event marked a collective effort to reclaim public space and enhance neighborhood identity.

Community-Driven Transformation

The initiative was supported by Digo Bikas Institute (DBI) and the Environment and Public Health Organisation (ENPHO), both of which played pivotal roles in consultations and planning. Workshops and awareness programs educated residents on sustainable practices, featuring local experts who discussed reducing carbon footprints and the benefits of green spaces.

A Day of Joy and Play

The celebration featured a vibrant street festival with food stalls, traditional crafts, and games, evoking a sense of nostalgia among participants. The concept of “Playborhood” was introduced, emphasizing outdoor play and social interaction. Activities included hopscotch, Dandibio (a traditional Nepali game), and creative versions of classic games like “Tigers and Goats,” reimagined as “Cars and Pedestrians.” This playful approach illustrated how community unity can reclaim streets from vehicular dominance.

Sustainable Mobility and Community Spirit

Residents were encouraged to use sustainable modes of transportation, such as walking and cycling, fostering a renewed appreciation for their neighborhood. The event transformed Hadigaun’s streets into lively communal spaces, reminiscent of a time when communities thrived on personal connections. Local businesses also joined in, setting up pop-up stalls along the carfree streets.

A Step Towards Permanent Change

What began as a one-day celebration has evolved into a weekly pilot program, with activities held every Saturday. This initiative reflects the residents’ commitment to transforming Hadigaun into an eco-friendly haven, revitalizing its cultural heritage and enhancing community engagement.

A Broader Vision for Sustainability

The success of the event illustrates a significant shift in mindset toward sustainability and community well-being. DBI emphasizes that it’s not just about infrastructure but about empowering communities to reclaim their spaces and participate in civic life.

Hadigaun’s journey toward becoming a permanent carfree zone showcases the power of community action and the importance of fostering connections that can lead to lasting change.
