Consequences of not speaking english or any native language in a foreign country or even in nepal.

Hello r/nepal, so I’m doing a research on languages and what consequences people have to face for not speaking the native language in a foreign land or not speaking english in schools in nepal itself. If you have any stories to tell, please do. It’ll help me out immensely. Anything works, whether it be funny or emotional. Please share your experiences, especially people who’ve faced racism for not speaking the native language.

  1. There is a rule in most private schools of Nepal against speaking in Nepali or any non-english language.

There’s a fine imposed for speaking in Nepali. There’s a theory that because of this rule being enforced for a very long time ans especially during the time children are developing most of their language and social skills, has been adverse to Nepali and local languages.

For example: Most Newar kids are not able to speak in Newari although they can understand it. Other non-written languages are also disappearing.
I don’t have any data on how fast is it happening or if it’s happening but you sure can experience it in daily lives.

Many school and college going kids prefer English even in their normal non-school conversations.

  2. Everytime we spoke Nepali except in Nepali class, we’d be fine rs 5. That was like 10 or so years ago. Of course, that was before we were told to speak in English but didnt.
Now I rarely speak Nepali and I’m fluent in English more than in Nepali.
