Its dangerous to leave any kind of candle/flame on overnight, including diyas (oil lamp)

I think this Hindu culture of not being allowed extinguish or blow out diyas because you will be cursed is a dangerous superstition that needs to end. Especially when it comes to oil lamps, people say LET IT GO OUT ITSELF! Ok but yesterday night when my family had the candle on and it was 10:30 pm. I said it’s time to diminish it bc we are all going to sleep and then they’re like all being crazy saying to just wait for it to go out we are all going to stay in the living room. 🙄 yeah right, they were all just there bc i said i was going to blow it out. Btw, my grandma passed away and my parents were doing the 13 day rituals so that candle was for her in front of her picture. Anyways, it was 11:30 and they said the candle 🪔 would light out itself in 10 min … BUT IT WAS MORE THAN AN HOUR AND STILL HAD LIGHT!

This has gone too far. The night before I had school early in the morning and I woke up at 10:40 to use the restroom at night, well no one was in the living room and all the lights were off BUT THE CANDLE WAS STILL LIT UNSUPERVISED. Mind you, it obviously was lit unattended for too long, not just a minute or two, or even 5. So I did the unthinkable for them and probably all of you, I lit it out. No one was there to witness it and they kept saying how that night it went out itself, but i told them that I did it and was mad at them for letting that happen.

THIS IS A FUCKING SAFETY HAZARD. I KNOW THEY DON’T CARE AND WERE READY TO GO TO SLEEP LEAVING THE CANDLE ON ! THEY WERE ABOUT TO DO IT YESTERDAY AT 11:30 AND THEN WHEN I CAME OUT OF MY ROOM TO SEE IF THE CANDLE WAS ON THEY SAW ME AND PRETENDED THEY WERE STILL GOING TO STAY.

THIS WAS SO FRUSTRATING AND NOBODY COULD GO TO SLEEP SO I THREATENED THEM THAT I WOULD THROW A SANDAL AND THAT FINALLY GOT THEM TO STOP.

SO THEN MY DAD WAS LIKE OKAY JUST TURN OFF THE CANDLE BUT WE CAN’T SEE IT SO THEY LEFT AND I BLEW IT. What a literal nightmare but at least i was able to sleep after that knowing out House wouldn’t catch on fire 🔥

Ofc this and other arguments are never going to end and are killing me. BUT SAFTEY COMES FIRST AND THERE’S NO BUTS…. not taking things seriously and not being safe is a curse. Not blowing candles. I’m thinking of buying battery candles since those are just a light that can stay on for a long time and does not pose any fire hazards. So it would be fine to leave those alone.

Lesson: do not ever leave candles 🪔 on all night unattended (actually awake, not just sleeping in the same room).
