Tiktok ban is not just about tiktok. This ban is an attack against democracy similar to what gyanedra shah did

Tiktok is the most popular social media platform in nepal. Not even facebook comes close. It has reached places where neither the government nor roads have reached. People from a remote village of darchula could make videos about how they haven’t got relief aids or a random person could leak audio tape of arjoo deuba and get it viral or a random person in mustang could show the world what it’s like to live there and all. And let’s not forget countless small businesses for which tiktok was the source of online marketing. It was also taking citizen journalism to its new height. 10 taaukeys in mantrimandal shouldn’t be able to shut voices of millions or decide what’s right and what’s wrong especially if somebody is making a livelihood out of it.

Let’s not forget that no democratic nation in the world except india has banned this app. And they had to wait for Chinese-Indian army border clash. But the reason nepal government has tried to ban is stating hate speech and vulgarity. These reasons can be extended to every social media platform. This opens the door for banning whatever social media platform they like. This is how democracies fail. Gyanendra shah too first went for press and slowly shut every media. Now prachanda could do the same thing saying our democracy is under attack from monarchs. There is a quote “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me.”

  1. I loved tiktok but after doing some research I found out 2 things

1)The actual ban was probably due to a caste vs caste issue where tension was started soley due to posts on tiktok promoting caste violence

    2) Tiktok was not providing proper information to nepal police/government about account data, which FB/ Insta were openly providing .

I am not 100 percent sure these were the reasons , but this is my theory

  2. First they ban tiktok ( i heard that a video went viral of a politician doing sexual activity with underaged girl maybe the reason) .
Next they will ban other social media too for making a speech against the government. We gotta stop it now or else our freedom is crushed. I know tiktok maybe cringe from people doing stupid things but at the end of the day its our right to do whatever we want with it.

  3. Fun fact: Most countries with “democracy” in the official name do quite poorly when it comes to democracy index.

Not so fun fact: People expect a *Communist party* not to censor anything and uphold democracy. Communism and Democracy/Liberty haven’t come together anywhere.

Sad fact: Despite constitution granting us “Right to Information”, there is no official channel to put forward queries and get information. (India has RTI filing system where you file a query and you get reply from the government)

Depressing fact: Government intentionally allows organisations and people to break the law so that they can use the dirt in the future if they have to get some kind of work done or even get revenge.

Existential crisis evoking fact: We can literally do nothing about this ban. No petition or movement will revert this ban.

Side note: I agree with you saying Banning tiktok is attack on democracy but its kinda stupid to argue that people in remote areas who could use tiktok to spread the word will be left speechless after the ban. If they can make a video on tiktok and then broadcast their opinions, they can also do it on other platforms. All the need is a different app.

  4. Although I don’t enjoy TikTok much, I think blaming one app for the country’s problems is like a modern-day witch hunt. India has banned TikTok for years, but the same issues persist on other platforms like Instagram reels and local clones like maxtakatak.

  5. Idk why are discussing this thing. There are much more important things than this one. The reason why i support the government decision is because of the mental heath issue caused by Tiktok. Have you noticed or not in your locality, every child is so addicted to these short and vulgar content. They can’t concentrate for more than 10 min in anything. How will they read, how will they grow ? That’s the important question. If you talk about Instagram and Facebook they are built for different purposes and tiktok for different reasons.

  6. >No Democratic nation has banned this app

Two of the largest democratic nations: India and US have banned this app in some form. US Government doesn’t allow the app in any government issued mobile device. This is the only widely used social media app banned in US.

I get it that it’s an encroachment of citizen right; even US hasn’t banned it for public usage outside of government issued device. But let’s not act as if this is a safe and clean app.

  7. https://wapo.st/3QWLBoT. [https://wapo.st/3QWLBoT](https://wapo.st/3QWLBoT) Read the first comment. That was Moi. It’s for your good and the good of the babies out there, like my 6-year-old niece, a great content creator, even at that age. But she did not miss a beat and is creating Shorts and whatever they are called on FB and Insta today. Great, at least there, she is not subject to AS MUCH bs, like someone masturbating on a subway with a beer in one hand and with a star over his junk. Then there are the ASMR fruit loops who insanely eat goop that looks like jello while making disgusting noises. Great. But worse is the propaganda that kids scroll over (hopefully). Look, I was a creator there and still am on YouTube, and TikTok sure pays more and has a wider reach than all the other platforms combined – as far as I can tell, but I don’t care. You can’t put your children on a 30-second loop of shit all day and then expect them to grow up sane. Nope, it won’t happen. Trust me, I’m near 70 and have seen generations of children grow up so far.

  8. Nah bro y’all need to accept this ban. Tiktok is fucking cancer. Y’all wanna be on tiktok all day, on your asses, doing absolutely nothing productive. This app is for “developed” countries that can afford to have literal millions people do nothing. That’s not the case for us, we need to go out there, in the real fucking world, and produce! Our country needs to boost production, and not dogshit TikToks. Read a damn book idiots

  9. Don’t know why people are supporting the ban of tiktok. Just because certain people don’t like/use the app does not mean it should be banned. At this point just turn Nepal into China.
Banning is never the solution there is always an alternative. Bunch of losers no wonder every youth is trying to leave this shit hole.

  10. Ramro kura pani chan naramro kura pani chan TikTok ma. Tara kura k aayo bhanda, naramro kura haru jastai hate speech, hindu vs christian, mongol vs aryan, gai vs goru, kt le chaak hallako, ajkal ta 8-9 ma padhne fucchi harule pani testai testai video matra halcha. Aba yo kura haru ko policing kasari garne ta?? Kehi upay cha? TikTok ko liaison office nai chaina Nepal ma. 1% le matra TikTok bata faida leka chan, baki 99% ko time matra waste bhako cha. TikTok jasto addictive app lai banda garnu ma mero samarthan cha.

Freedom of speech ko name ma kohi pani niyam kanun bhanda mathi hudaina. Yedi TikTok lai morally policing garna sakidaina bhane, yeslai banda garnu nai besh.

China ma chalne TikTok le educational ra creative content haru lai matra priority dincha, aru desh ma chalne jasto TikTok hoina teha. Chinese government le children lai k kati samay digital apps ra games haru chalauna diney bhanera niyam nai pass gareko cha. Aba Nepal ma testo garna thalyo bhane pseudo-liberals haru le “right to freedom” ko nara japera uddum machauchan. Aba garne chai k ta? Samaj alig chhada hudai gayo bhane al kati policing garnu thikai ho. TikTok banda garera 1% lai ghata hola, tara 98% janata lai faida nai huncha.
Joslai ghata huncha, tei nai ho hamro freedom hamper bhayo bhanera ufriera karaune. 1.2 billion population bhako India ma TikTok ban le freedom hamper bhako chaina, Nepal ma chai pseudo liberals haru ko sato khako cha.

  11. Pros of TikTok’s Existence:
    – fun timepass
    – creator revenue
    – Culture Promote
    – business promotions
    – reach
    – international reach
    – Local level cluster of social Media better than FB, YT, IG.
    – Freedom of Speech
    – AntiGoverment Criticism

    Cons of TikTok’s existence:
    – Annoying Content
    – Americanism (Culture Copy)
    – FauxTalent
    – Hyperboles
    – **CCP**
    – Region Lock (not easy to use VPN)
    – Data Steal
    – Exclusivity (TikTok watermark)
    – Distractions
    – 18+ content
    – HateSpeech
    – Racial Divide.
    – No good/more number of Nepali Moderators

now listen here, all those pros of tiktok could be done in FB, YT, IG, SC. Infact those other sites pay more revenue than the cheapass chinese tiktok. But the leverage tiktok has over them is that they have a better ‘Community’, as they push the local videos irrespective of the algorithm training in the FYP feed. That’s why it got popular in the first place. TikTok’s overreach of our data via SimCard & IP address location analysing, reading our keyboard’s Clipboard, reading vulnerable android phones data loopholes, sending it to some server in China for Profiling, and so many other shady activities that even FB, Google do but the difference is CCP is the one who’s involved. They’re aware of the turmoils that TikTok brings, but they deliberate push it out to the western world and as a repercussion, Nepal falls into the trap of the same algorithmic agenda that they have.

It’s not that Government banned tiktok authoritatively. A goverment employee went to singapore to negotiate with tiktok. after seeing the same problem repeat, the goverment said enough is enough.

Look i’m antiGovernment too, but This is something for the good that Goverment has done and I agree that Prachanda might’ve been biased to ban after that Shanti Baral nipslip or Durga Prasai or Sheetal Pandey or whoever, but I think government people had the meeting and went like
“*yo tiktok ek dum chada chada vids recommend garcha*”, and
another goverment person might’ve been like : “*oh yes solti, I’ve experienced that too, dashain ma pariwar sanga basera hasaune tiktoks herirathey, swipe gareko next video ma, farsi jatro chaak bhayeki euta thithi ley po twerk garchin. Laaja ley bhuttuka bhaako ni*”. another person : “*mero ma ta Bhelu Baje ley Maatukni bhani mukh chadeko matra auncha*”. Another Person : “*Aru kei hoina, yo Shanti Baral ko TikTok live ma nipslip kadapi appropriate hoina* ” , another person : “*mero ma ta Gai ko masu khana pawos bhanne matra auncha*” , while Prachanda be like “*Mero ma ta malai 17k ko murderer bhancha yaar sabai ley, lastai chitta dukhyo, ban garnai paryo*”

  12. That app had nothing but soft porn from underaged teens. Why half of people pretend they cared or watched anything remotely significant on ‘tiktok’ out of everything? Now, it’s all of sudden a culmination of peak politics, democracy and what not. 😭😭

  13. Dude get ur point but I think to ban titkok has to be a great decision the atrocities it created it our society was adverse I see small kids making vulgur content they are small they don’t even know about life and now they just copy adults doing immoral stuff on TikTok and people are way too harsh and easily tend to get angry their level of patience has massively gone down due to constantly consuming the tiktok content which is so short 🙌

  14. Thank god for the Tik-Tok ban, the society will se less of;

    1) Rider Kta moh’s
    2) Ugly bitches shaking their bum bums
    3) Aunty’s hitting their crotch and asking for a man
    4) Lip syncing movie star wannabes
    5) Unnecessary hype of stupid viral videos.
    6) The most important one, clueless mofos who are fucking illiterate and unemployed preaching their knowledge on country’s crisis

  15. There are lots of hate speech video circulating in Tiktok. Hate speech is not a freedom of speech. You can cry a river but finally nepal government has done something good.
