Since coming to the USA, I have met so many people who are lactose intolerant. Some people even of European descent yet when I was in Nepal or India I had not met a single person with this condition. But according to data, only about 30% of South Asians can digest milk.
So what is going on? Am I lactose intolerant and dont even know it? I have always loved milk products and eaten them with relish and have no effect except I gained weight during the pandemic when I ate too much ghee and cheese.

Most people just shove it off without thinking a lot. People have various ranges of symptoms from mild to severe and in Nepal, I believe mild symptoms like acnes and getting gastric are caused by other things as well and are neglected. Most people fail to realize that dairy has been affecting them in some way or other.
Edit : wanted to add a few things, I am also a severe lactose intolerant and like milk tea. One solution is to only drink milk tea or milk items if you are home or will be home soon.
Also last time i did some research on this, they say about 90% of east Asian are lactose intolerant. It is also because of gene and evolution and said that milking cow and drinking milk was engrained in European culture from a long long time, and they were able to digest lactose. American share the same European ancestry so they are fine too.
Other thing is that babies are not lactose intolerant so intolerance to lactose grows as you age and after 20 it’s hard to digest lactose. Same thing happened to me.
Also drinking milk with other foods will lessen rhe effect imo.
They don’t probably know there’s such a thing. In nepal they call it gastic.
So basically 30% of south Asia might be that most of the 30% category people are in Nepal. But Most people do have lactose intolerance but they just say maila Doodh dherai khayo vane pet dukhxa, gastic badxa etc.
you’re not lactose intolerant if you have been diegesting milk pretty well. For me,i get really bloated and also suffer from acne and almost a very severe stomach ache if i drink plain milk or anything with high milk content.but coffee, chiyama thorei milk haldw chahi kei hunna malai.Nepal ma ni dherei cha hola but afai lai thahunna they brush it off as gastritis or something else
Allergy of common foods like peanuts and eggs also seem prevalent in America which is very unheard of in Nepal.
I think it’s mainly due to lack of awareness and our culture. Two of my roommates in the US (Nepali) are lactose intolerant. They never noticed it much. Sadhai dudh Khane ani pet dukhne pet damma bhayo Kei khana man chaina bhanne. Ek choti gharma jhukkiyera cow milk ko satta oat milk lyayim tyo Khaepachi Kei nahuda they found out they were lactose intolerant lol.
Arko kura yaha afford garna sakincha, parents are more careful about what they feed their children and also, childhood dekhi nai khadai aepachi allergies ko effect ni Ghatcha hola.
Tolerance ra allergy early childhood exposure ma ni depend garxa vanne dekhauxa. Khaire haru dudh khuwaudainan, Sanoma variety of food khuwaudainan ani anek intolerance ra food allergy hunxa. Navaye badam khada Nepal ma kasailai hospital janu pareko sunincha? Badhi vaye padh aauxa.
It depends on your caste. In India, Haryana states seems to be the most lactose tolerant because of the high amount and frequency of Sistashta ancestry present amongst them. The SNP that affects the ability to digest lactose are rs4988235 and rs182549 and the Alleles that “helps” to digest lactose are more likely found amongst caste that has high Sinsthata ancestry. Casts such as Brahmins, Jaat/Jatt, Ror, Pasthun, Kho etc seems to be more lactose tolerant compared to other groups(such as tribals).
Lactose tolerance is also found amongst tibetains, though it’s less.
One way to know if you carry the genotype to digest lactose is to take a dna test.
that 30% number is for certain parts of the Indian sub-continent jasto lagyo. people in Nepal and Northern territories of India are less likely to be lactose intolerant.
I have been lactose intolerant for about 5years now. I have a friend who has been lactose intolerant since I have known him for more than 10 years. He has mild effects when he drinks milk, but is able to eat other dairy products. I on the other hand cannot consume any dairly product at all have severe effects which gradually increased.
I dont get it either. Almost everyone consumes milk or milk tea. Yet a very few ever complain of the typical symptoms.
my house in nepal used to have a gothalo and we’d drink fresh milk every day and teti bela mero pet fulera katro hunthyo but i was just a kid and so elders used to find it cute tara hami bahira sare pachi ani doctor lai dekhauda lactose intolerant ho bhanera thapayau. my brother is LI too but he just takes lactaid, says a prayer, and consumes daily filled food lmao
Nepal hunu jel kei hunna thyo Canada aaye dekhi almond milk matra khana pareko chha.
I had read somewhere that lactose intolerance is greater in the US. probably because of how they use chemicals in literally everything and nothing is organic. In Nepal, milk and milk products used to be organic and Nepalese people have higher tolerance than Western people.
My sister has it and she has a severe one where if she eats milk she has stomach ache and vomiting problems. But some might have it and just don’t know it’s lactose intolerance and the data also can be incorrect.
Think of a ton of people in their 30s and 40s complaining about gastritis. Lactose intolerance is a culprit along with masaledaar diet that’s extremely carb-centric.
>Am I lactose intolerant and dont even know it?
Do you shit immediately after drinking milk and eating dairy? Does your stomach feel bloated? Does your stomach hurt?
Most people in Nepal dont know what lactose intolerant is, what you dont know cant hurt you kinda mentality.
Forget lactose intolerant, most people in Nepal dont even know what food allergies are. Hundreds of people go into anaphylaxis shock and die. People dont realize its because of food allergies.
Bhai malai cha lactose intolerance. It sucks living with this. Half of my day goes on literally shitting. It’s a pain to have this condition. Aaja bring other issues like IBS on top of that, literally kehi khana na Milne. Mid 20s ma chu Ani yesto cha. Life is not easy man but gives me motivation to stay healthy on the plus side.
Do you notice people spitting all the time? That’s not normal.
Highest number of lactose intolerance is in Asia. We just ignore. Maile ni kati barsa ignore garey. Still fully avoid garna garo nai huncha dairy items.
It’s not only south Asia but whole Asia. I heard most of the Asian people have lactose intolerance and I got to know i have it too when I couldn’t poop well.
There are actually a lot of people.
But nobody gives a single fuck.
Because ek cup Chiya din ko dui time vaye ni peunai paryo.
Lactose intolerance is a propaganda funded by cows. Western cows are technologically advanced and financially rich. So they spend trillions of dollars on this propaganda.
Some people may actually be lactose intolerant and may suffer but most of the people are just psychosomatic about being lactose intorelant
If it doesn’t affect your daily life and work, probably it’s insignificant and should be nothing to worry about. Lactose intolerance is a mild issue which may cause major disturbance in daily life/work, otherwise you are okay 😊
