Now and again when I’m talking in Nepali and cant think of the correct word for something and have to resort to an English word, I feel a sort of shame towards myself for not being able to express myself in my native tongue. Why are we, when growing up, taught to think of our own language as an inferior means of communication and actively discouraged from speaking in it, especially when we go to those coveted private english medium schools? I study abroad like a lot of Nepalis, and I was texting my friend back home while sitting next to a Chinese friend, who happened to see and ask why we were conversing in English/Latin rather than our own Nepali/Devanagari. I didn’t have a real answer for him, other than that we were made to speak in English at all times in school, and that we were punished if we spoke our native language. Its a shame that kids are taught this, it is a shame on our system and society that thinks this is a good thing. No other place outside of Nepal/North India has such a culture in private schools which expressly forbid us from speaking our own language. Go to any other country’s subreddit and you’ll see most of the posts and people conversing there will be in their own language, the minority of English language posts will come from tourists/immigrants.
P.S. I am not saying anything against learning english. English is a useful language and should be learned, but it can be learned without demeaning your own native tongue.

Eh it’s normal nowadays and noone should feel shameful. I find Nepali difficult (the complex words) but can talk in Nepali cuz obviously.
It’s a theory but I think schools teach us English and force us to say is because one of our main contributors to GDP is remittance so ig they gotta make sure that atleast kids know English. It’s just a theory tho, not based on facts or evidence.
Well, students hate Nepali since School. It is one of subjects where we are taught 85-90 is full marks no matter how well you do. If they just skim through book, they get around 65-70. If they study really well, they also get 75-80. So, the effort is wasted. Nepali is represented as hard subject where you get minimum return for studying it. Putting effort on other subjects is much more easier and beneficial for marks. And, students in school don’t really care about Language much.
The same reason you didn’t write this in Nepali.
Don’t feel ashamed.
Do you ever see American’s being protective of their culture. And yet it is the most influential in the world.

Its ok. But I find it deeply annoying when people half of the sentence is in english and half in nepali.
Growing up there was no Nepali tying in cell and in other keyboards at all. Google was also late to bring up Nepali language into life. I think this unavailability early on has forced me and my generation into typing everything in English.
