Unpopular opinion: Taxing outbound tourists is good and it should be increased.

Unpopular opinion: Taxing outbound tourists is good and it should be increased.

Bidesh ghumna sakne Nepali haru kati nai hola in a country with a per capita GDP of $1340. Despite this tourism bata aune bhanda badi $ bahira ghumna jane le lagxan. 2019 was peak year where 12 lakh tourists visited and even then Nepali tourist expense outflow was more than total inflow. 2000 jana Nepali haru Sri Lanka ghumna gako bhanera balen le lekhecha which is $10M (2000\*$5000) out of our forex reserves. Guessing average spend at $5000, its probably more than that.

5% is reasonable (should be more considering how few Nepali people can even afford it. Maybe make it slab based on amount you take.) Luxury should be taxed. Whats happening now is almost a case of reverse subsidy where majority of workers send remittance & its gobbled up by the few uber privileged, outbound tourists, education fees etc. Imports run the country so not including it. I don’t even care about the boosting domestic tourism angle, if you can afford such travels, pony up and pay some tax.

  1. Esto opinion dine bela ali study garera dinu ni. Chak bata opinion nikalnu vaena ni.

Traveling to south asian countries like, thailand, cambodia, indonesia is cheaper/equal to domestic tourism in Nepal except the air fare. USD 5000 reh average tait… 1 week ma 400-800 usd chai hola average.

Ani bahira ghumna jana sakne ko income tax kati dincha any idea? Its >= USD 1000 per year

    Source: my experience.

  2. do you have a source for tourism outflow being greater than inflow?

1.2 million manxe auda jati kamayo, you think Nepalis are spending that much abroad?

a very small number of folks go on holiday abroad. nowhere near 1.2 million. how much could they be potentially spending?

  3. First of all, currently, you can only exchange up to 2,500 USD for travel purpose, and it was only 1,500 USD for last 2 years.

Nepalese already pay income TAX based on slab rate (which is among the highest in Asia), and on top of that you want to put TAX based on slab when people want to spend there money?

You are just angry with rich people, nothing more.

Also, there should be no TAX for people who earn in foreign currency and have their own FCY.

  4. >if you can afford such travels, pony up and pay some tax.

So only rich people can enjoy vacation? Middle- lowclass people dont deserve nice things? What kind of logic is that? People work hard and save so they can travel… gtfoh

  5. 1340 is just official figure in paper…Nepal KO aadha Vanda besi economy black ma chalcha…it is probably double than that…wealth inequality Pani derai cha eskaranle Garda…seems like you have no clue…

Eskaranle Garda nai tax high cha Nepalma because there are many who evade taxes in Nepal…so badayeko nai Ramro ho bahira Moj garna Janey harulai…
