Bagmati Province Leads Nepali GDP Contributions

Bagmati Province has emerged as the frontrunner in contributing to Nepal’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while Karnali Province lags behind, according to the latest Provincial GDP Estimates for the fiscal year 2080/81 released by the National Statistics Office (NSO).

The report, made public on Wednesday, reveals that Bagmati Province is estimated to account for a significant 36.4 percent share of the nation’s GDP in the current fiscal year. Following closely behind is the Koshi Province with 15.8 percent, trailed by Lumbini at 14.3 percent, Madhesh at 13.1 percent, Gandaki at 9.1 percent, and Sudurpaschim at 7.1 percent. Conversely, the Karnali Province holds the lowest GDP share at only 4.3 percent.

The NSO report indicates minor fluctuations in provincial GDP contributions compared to the revised estimates for the fiscal year 2079/80. “While there is a slight decrease in GDP contribution from the Koshi, Madhesh, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces compared to last year, other provinces are poised to experience modest growth,” stated the Office.

The estimated GDP at consumer price for the current fiscal year stands at Rs 575 billion, reflecting the economic landscape across the provinces.

Since the implementation of federalism, the NSO has been diligently monitoring economic activities and generating data to facilitate evidence-based policymaking and mitigate socioeconomic disparities.
