TATA to start making Apple iPhones in India

In a groundbreaking development, Tata Group is poised to revolutionize iPhone production by commencing assembly operations in India following the successful acquisition of Wistron Corp’s Indian manufacturing unit. This pivotal move has been greenlit by the Wistron board, which recently sanctioned the sale of Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing India Private Limited to Tata Electronics Private Limited, marking a significant transaction valued at an estimated $125 million.

Deputy Minister for Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, took to the social media platform X to announce that a Tata company is gearing up to initiate iPhone production in India, catering to both domestic and global markets. This strategic collaboration underscores Tata Group’s prowess in diversifying its business portfolio into cutting-edge technology sectors.

The noteworthy sale, as disclosed in a statement from the Taiwan-based supplier, aligns with Apple’s forward-thinking strategy of decentralizing its production operations and designating India as a pivotal growth driver. Since commencing iPhone assembly in India with Wistron in 2017, Apple has further expanded its footprint through strategic contracts with prominent manufacturers, including Foxconn and Pegatron Corp.

The Wistron plant, located in Karnataka state’s Narasapura, faced unprecedented challenges in December 2020 when it was compelled to cease operations for three months due to worker protests resulting in property damage and losses amounting to millions of dollars over wage disputes. Despite these challenges, Tata Group’s acquisition signals a transformative phase for iPhone manufacturing in India, with a focus on overcoming logistical hurdles and capitalizing on the country’s burgeoning tech ecosystem.
