Over 550,000 Acquire Overseas Work Permits in Nepal

Approximately 550,000 individuals have secured work permits for overseas employment until April 12 of the current fiscal year 2023/24.

During the period from March 14 to April 12, 70,933 workers obtained work permits, indicating a steady flow of individuals seeking opportunities abroad.

According to Kabiraj Upreti, Director at the Department of Foreign Employment, out of the total, 64,241 are men, and 6,692 are women, highlighting the predominance of male workers in the overseas job market.

The data from the Department reveals a consistent trend in the acquisition of work permits over the fiscal year. From July 17 to August 17, 2023, 55,575 people received permits, with subsequent months showing similar figures.

From March 14 to April 12, 2024, a significant number of individuals ventured into overseas employment, with 17,818 going to the UAE, followed by 13,614 to Saudi Arabia, and 11,204 to Qatar, reflecting the popularity of Gulf countries among Nepali workers.

Additionally, a considerable number of individuals pursued opportunities in Malaysia, Kuwait, and Bahrain during the same period.

Moreover, the data indicates a diversification in destination countries, with notable numbers seeking employment in Romania, Croatia, Cyprus, Japan, the Maldives, Mauritius, and South Korea, showcasing the global reach of Nepali workers.
