My opinion is that the footpath is NOT for private or commercial use, neither by the poor nor the rich. Those are public spaces. When one use it for such, others can not use that space.
This subreddit has been an echo chamber for anti-Balen redditors. This seemingly innocuous post asking for thoughts is just asking for confirmation of one’s thought rather than engaging in meaningful discussion. And it’s also a way to impose on less-informed ones about anti-Balen rhetoric.
I asked a question yesterday which was downvoted to oblivion. Still, at the risk of never being able to post again in r/Nepal (which is attained when you have negative karma points), I will ask the same question again:
1. Aren’t KTM streets too crowded and needs managing? Doesn’t that management require removal of footpath shops?
2. Why should KTM Municipality offer shutters for free to these shops? Wouldn’t that undercut someone who had to pay for it?
3. Why is only KTM protested against in such vehemence while other great cities like Pokhara do it too?
There is ministry of poverty alleviation in centre and state level, what is it doing to eliminate such informal sectors for uplifting and formalizing them ?
Even as per the old interviews of sukumbasis they were able to make their children doctors…. living there somehow, most of the footpath businesses were making huge money provided they don’t have to pay any rents and taxes. They were causing accidents covering the footway and no any streamlined taxes for govt. They were the competitors for those doing business in shutters in formal way.
There is no way a local govt among 753 can solve such nationalised issue. As most street vendors were Indians or from outer districts, the 752 local level and the state govt should think about the mgmt of those people.
If they want to do business in formal way in KTM then, almost 20% shutters in KTM are already vacant, they can find their space.
Balen has my full support when it comes to cleaning up the street and use it for what it was meant for. However, I think he has been hiding for too long now. He should come to the media as he did during his campaign and express his vision clearly. He has remained quiet long enough.
Balen is correct in this case. The removal of vendors on footpath is a good work for these reasons:
1. Yedi euta manxe le mahango vada tirera shutter ma pasal chalako xa which is normal and legal, then same time arko manxe aayera usko dokan agadi footpath ma same category ko saman bechdai xa ra customers tandai xa, then tell me is it good ?Koi jata tyata bata aayera footpath ma bechan lagne ani correct way ma pasal chalako manxe chahi hereko herai din vari ?
2. The footpath is for public and kathmandu is a dense place to live. Tetro populated thau ma bato pauna garo hunxa tyo mathi bich bich ma iniharuko nautanki sahanu parne?
3. Everything has it’s way of doing. Shutters are made for the purpose. Why don’t those footpath sellers shift to shutter and do their business there instead?
4. There must be proper competition in the market. If someone is competing legit then why should other be allowed to use shortcuts that is not even legal or good for others.
5. Footpath tiniharu ko bau ko hoina. Footpath public ko ho , Jabarjasti thau thau ma aafno stall lagaune ani tyehi thyechaarine for whole day distrubing and humiliating public walking nearby should be banned forver.
We all know that footpath should be utilized only for public. Balen may manage place for those footpath sellers if they allow him to do his work instead of protesting on every step he makes. Not a fan of any political assholes but he seems to have done things in kathandu that no one has even thought of. He is among rare non corrupted politicians in KTM.
Hijo ko kura sunera ta yo eee vanaudo thik lagena malai.
Footpath chahiyo re byapar garna. Foot path vaneko ta hidne bato ho.
I don’t know man, when I see video of city police beating street vendor i feel against balen but when I see iih backed by gagan etc then my support goes back to balen.
Why attack the activist? The essence of the caricature is to put the spotlight on Mayor Balen for his arrogance. He is after all public servant and a little humility won’t harm his reputation.
Edit- adjusted public servant.
Lots of privileges assholes in the comments. Remove poverty, not poors. Remove the footpath vendors after they are given a viable and stable alternatives.
OP ko street shop hataidiyo jasto cha
Fact that lih protest got more media coverage than thousands of teacher protests for pension is highly suspicious. Feels like he was backed by political leaders.
Stunts by politically influenced so called सामाजिक अभियान्ता
Ihh uhh or whoever of these chameli gang has nothing to do with footpath sellers or anything at all. They just want their sweet $$ payout and that’s it.

One got power playing on the sentiments of nalayak citizens and another does same in time to time.
There are further more agenda and reasons to protest for but bro chosed this one, i laugh on this.
Other hand, the one true king, heir to the throne with only ego and aggresion does what he is good at.
Yo what’s kisuke doing there
Not rich yet, op is street vendor.
Balen may be hot headed but iih: is a fucking opportunist and has always carried political agenda behalf Nepali congress. , streets and footpaths are for walking, open spaces and healthy roads. Kathmandu has 70-80% street vendors from India. so, 70-80% income from streets flows to India, while most nepali businesses has to pay rent. iih: and his gang, cherry-picked 20% nepali street vendors and used them as sentiment for his personal benefit. Yes, personal. how do you guys think iih: can afford his lifestyle being unemployed
I dont care. I think what Balen is doing is right. We should all ban these street vendors. 1. since majority of them are Indians, the produce they sell are from India and then the money also goes back to India. 2. Taxes. 3. Traffic congestion.
I go to pick up my mom from our shop every night and each time Ive ever been in a near miss situation, there is always some street vendor around. Either its because people are going from one street vendor to the other without a care in the world of where the zebra crossing is or the vendors straight up just occupying a whole lane causing the traffic to flow weirdly since bikes will literally stop in front of the vendors to make their purchase as well. I think when Ktm is giving back vendors their thela gada as they have agreed to, they should only give it back to 1. Actual Ktm basindas. 2. Nepali citizens. Every other thela gada should be taken away. and even the ones that have been returned should not be let back on unless a proper system is developed.
Honestly this problem is of the entire nation and not just KMC. Idk why this E guy didnt go to the Samsad Bhawan for his protest since it is the countrys responsibility & obligation to keep these vendors in a proper system. I think balen was wise to bring this issue in the spotlight.
