So, this is for non techie users, VPN apps are now grossing in play store in Nepal since today. This is just a DNS level ban so VPN isn’t required and free VPNs should be avoided as much as possible.
What free VPNs can do?
1. Track you for ads
2. Eat your battery
3. Degrade phone’s performance
4. Intercept your Packets (the http ones)
Just go to settings and search for “Private DNS”. Most newer phones have it.
Then enter any hostname from below
1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com
dns.google
p2.freedns.controld.com
Then turn off your wifi and turn it again to start using it.
Note: This will also unblock all porn sites so if you want to keep blocking porn then use
no-porn.freedns.controld.com

For everyone’s information, the main agenda of the post is to “NOT USE free VPN”. Personally, I have never used tiktok. 90% of the free VPNs are just viruses and they log your packets. Just be safe and and NEVER enter passwords while connected to such VPNs.
I prefer using dns(dot)adguard(dot)com as a hostname. It acts as a good adblock as well.
this is not about using tiktok through vpn. it’s about the intention of government to think that it can ban apps that it doesn’t endorse. i don’t use tiktok that much but I am against this ban and I can protest in maitighat if need be.
This is no use.
People use social media for the community it provides. Once an app is banned from the mainstream, it basically kills the community. Only few have the technical competence or energy to go through all the trouble to use the app again, the rest will move on. Even if they somehow manage to access the app, there is no local nepali community it once had.

btw how safe is use of vpn tara (free/paid)? could individuals face legal issues over using vpn to have access to tiktok? asking bc i have almost zero knowledge on these things

Why even have this conversation when this Tiktok ban hasn’t even been tested in the Supreme Court?? I think we should wait for that before we discuss options but yes once tiktok is permanently banned then vast majority of Nepalis simply won’t use it and many don’t have technical expertise to do also.

the custom dns doesn’t work for me. few videos load but rest are frozen. using vianet right now. vpn is working fine but don’t want to use it. guys please help. i don’t trust my parents with VPN. custom DNS would help me a lot.
