Does reading books actually makes a person intellectual?

So I have been reading tons of book since 7 months and I am glad that I have learned so many things. I have noticed myself that I have become more observing , silent ,and emotionally clam. Am I in the process of rewiring my thought process or living in a delusion.

  1. # Don’t just say you have read books. Show that through them you have learned to think better, to be a more discriminating and reflective person. Books are the training weights of the mind. They are very helpful, but it would be a bad mistake to suppose that one has made progress simply by having internalized their contents.

    # – Epictetus

For many they just accumulate books to show their social media crowd of their identity as a reader. If the books that you are reading helping you, and you have changed in your habits, perception and behavior, helps in how you view the world better then more power to you.

    .enjoy

  2. Yes! Those who say no haven’t read good books or haven’t read enough books or enough times.

If you read non fictional, how to, self books… quantity or quality wise, you perspective shifts. You can read one good book 100s of times until it is ingrained in your mind and behavior or you can read 100s of similar books/similar topics and you’ll have these thoughts, lessons perspective in your mind whether consciously or subconsciously which will influence your behavior and though process.

Best would be to be pro-active, take a good book, read, takes notes, apply lessons, practice, adjust, adapt it your life.

Reading one book time and time again gives you more insights and you learn more lessons each time, you understanding deepens.

As you experienced, it helps you see your situation from different perspective, it gives you more mental tools to deal with your life, you understand yourself and others, you understand why and how things happens and how to handle the situation which in turn gives you confidence to deal with life and you can be calm.

  3. 1. People who claim to be smart really aren’t
    2. In a sense it does. Reading a book requires patience, it’s very quiet and calming and can sort of be used as therapy and of course gives you knowledge. Increases vocabulary and ability to write what you think to the maximum, because imo everyone’s capable of thinking to the max, but they just can’t write what they think.
    3. It makes you better as a person, and gives you new perspectives on things that you’ve never thought about. You use your brain more, and question more. And questioning is the key to everything.

However obviously it will never increase your actual intellect. That’s a 100%. It will just cause you to have mental benefits that allow you to use your intellect better.

That’s when we talk about books that are beneficial.

The non beneficial entertainment books give you new vocabulary and the same mental benefits, just doesn’t give you a new perspective of things you haven’t seen before.

Plus in a world full of essays and debates, books will ALWAYS be beneficial in that side of things. If you’re a mathematician or something like that, books don’t make you better at it except train your patience and brain usage

  4. To be an intellectual, it really depends on the books you read. History, Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology would have a better claim at making you an intellectual compared to fictions (which have their own merits)

    But my conclusion is this:
Do reading books make you an intellectual? Yes, depending on the type of book you read.

Are books the only way to be intellectual? No. With the internet you have a vast amount of knowledge available to in all sorts of forms.

Read more books and look for knowledge in other mediums as well, is what I have to say

  5. Yes it does, i believe we can not only be intellectually smart but also wise.i have noticed a lot of dramatic changes in my perspective and for sure i am being a better human being.
I feel kinda indebted to all the medium that have came across me which will always contribute to my journey in a better way.
I first started by reading novels and stories and after some time i felt gravition towards self help book .i realised books are the best friend.

  6. Yes, it does. The difference between a non-educated people and the ones with PhD are the number of books they have studied along the way. Don’t listen to these discouraging leg pullers in the comment section.

  7. Yo subreddit ma dherai Padne wala haru chaina vanne mathi ko comment haru le prove garcha. Padne haru le dada katera uvo lagera jancha, timi haru chei bhir ma basera dialogue handei garnu hai.

Ani auta “intellectual” keyword le teti offend hune haru vanepachi afai sochnus unaru ko bhogaai sochaai ra bujaai kati sano cha vanera. Dhanyabaad!

  8. Reading good books really, really helps. There’s two ways to know: one to experience and the other to read/learn about it. People, especially those that don’t read as often, might undermine the value of reading but it’s imperative for being a learned person. Reading greatly expands your knowledge of various things in the world, but it’s not just that. It also helps you become a better—a more nuanced—thinker and writer. It also improves your communication skills. All in all, reading good books will only help, and do no harm.

  9. It’s also been 7 months or something like that since I have started reading books. Honestly I don’t know if I have become more intellectual or not but I have certainly changed a lot since then. My perspective towards life has become more positive I believe. So yes books have helped me a lot to grow mentally and I am really grateful for that.

I think books especially self help books are probably the best way for self growth and yah it may very well help you grow intellectually depending upon what sort of books you read and how you take in the knowledge you gained.

  10. Yes, it does, but it is important to know when to use the knowledge you gained as a result of it. Like some might become very badly PROUD like “ghamandi” (tyo word nai aayena english ko) khale while others might become more observing as you said. Also, when you quote something you read on a bool in a conversation with a friend or anyone, that’s literally sounds and feels so nice. It makes you look smart.

  11. Reading books make you gain more knowledge so I don’t see why not?
But the thing is dherai jaso manche haru le reading books is the only way to gain more knowledge, become smarter and intellectual bhanne thaneko huncha when in reality you can gain knowledge even by just talking to many different people, or even by just observing. The trick is to be remain curious all the time about the world and things around you. That’s what’ll develop a person intellectually, in my opinion. Don’t just be bookish smart.

  12. It’s not about reading books. It’s about applying the ideas gained from books which store them. Reading books is just vocabulary like someone else said. And hell, Mein Kampf is a book as well. It’s not about reading them but reading the right ones, thinking about it, debating, agreeing or disagreeing with it and applying it to make a positive change.

  13. Nope. Books will teach you a lot but just because someone reads doesn’t mean that they are smart. Especially by reading books with a story.

Tyo delusion ma chai nabasnu hai. I read books so I am smart vandai basera kaam xaina.

  14. No. This is what I thought when I read books, but never had a single critical thought about them.

People need to be able to comment and criticise upon works they read; otherwise you’ll just be reduced to regurgitating words, that others have written.

  15. I don’t know about increasing intellect but books increases your vocabulary which it helps in articulating words when speaking that might be the reason for other people thinking them smart.
