Saturdays at Hadigaon

Saturdays at Handigaon

Handigaun, one of the oldest urban settlements in the Kathmandu Valley, is largely overlooked despite its rich history dating back to the Lichhavi period. The town’s traditional character has diminished under urbanization, with few remnants of its cultural past remaining visible. Historically, Handigaun has been revitalized during its festivals, particularly the Gahana Khojne Jatra and Satya Narayan Jatra, which showcase the area’s Newari culture and traditions. Recently, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City declared Handigaon a vehicle-free zone on Saturdays, allowing locals to host street festivals that highlight their heritage through food and festivities. This initiative, along with ongoing restoration projects and increased community involvement, aims to rejuvenate Handigaun’s cultural identity and attract visitors.
