ETS, the organization behind the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT, has announced a significant milestone for individuals aspiring to study, work, or migrate to Australia. Effective from May 5, TOEFL iBT has been officially recognized as a valid English proficiency test for all Australian visas.
In a statement, ETS highlighted the importance of this development, stating that it provides valuable opportunities for individuals to showcase their English proficiency through the TOEFL iBT test. This recognition underscores the test’s credibility and its relevance in various global contexts.
TOEFL iBT is renowned as the most widely accepted test of academic English proficiency, trusted by institutions worldwide. It is currently accepted by 100 percent of Australian universities and over 12,500 institutions across 160 countries, reaffirming its status as a premier assessment tool for English proficiency.
The recognition of TOEFL iBT for Australian visas follows a rigorous review process conducted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs. The comprehensive evaluation, undertaken following updates to the TOEFL iBT last year, reaffirms its suitability as a measure of English proficiency for visa applicants.
According to ETS, applicants who have taken the TOEFL iBT test from May 5 onward can now submit their scores as part of their Australian visa application, facilitating a streamlined process for individuals seeking entry into Australia.
Sachin Jain, Country Manager of ETS India & South Asia, expressed enthusiasm about the development, stating, “At ETS, we are dedicated to promoting global higher education and mobility through our world-class assessments.” He emphasized Australia’s appeal to Nepali students and working professionals, citing the significant enrollment of over 53,000 Nepali students in Australian universities in 2023.
Jain further highlighted Australia’s position as a leading destination for higher education and post-study work opportunities, with nine Australian universities ranking among the top 100 globally according to the latest QS World University Rankings.
The recognition of TOEFL iBT for Australian visas represents a significant step forward in facilitating international mobility and enhancing access to educational and professional opportunities in Australia for individuals worldwide.
