I recently opened TikTok and was completely surprised by the comments section. I observed a troubling sense of division and discord among the nepalese people, which I didn’t expect to see among them.
Have you all noticed the growing extremism in various parts of Nepal? I just watched the popular media person podcast, Mr. Biswa Limbu podcast, where he had guests who are actively promoting extremism in various parts of Country. Their direct frustration towards all Brahmin and Chhetri, their culture and religion is genuinely frustrating for me. Although I don’t currently live in Nepal and belong to the western part of Nepal, where I never had limbu, Rai, tamang friends, I developed a sense of insecurity specifically towards Limbu, Rai and Tamang people. I know this is wrong and can triggered them but it’s a real feeling looking at the majority people opinions on tiktok and other socail media like instragram, facebook. Also, It would be unfair to focus only on the Mongol National Organization(MNO), Hindu extremism, Christian extremism and muslim extremism have also been rapidly increasing. The recent case in Nepalgunj, banke has deeply disturbed me. Ironically, I used to proudly tell my Indian friends how Nepalese people, regardless of their differences based on caste, culture, or religion, respect each other.

Nothing new ,the social media is doing its work. Just don’t partake in any of that and you can still say to your friend that you are nepali and you respect others regardless of their caste, culture and religion.
Welcome to the Internet bro. Take a topic of interest – politics, religion, history, whatever it maybe – you’ll find the most views and click are always the extremist side of the spectrum. Perhaps, we as humans gravitate towards fear.
The rise in extremism and intense political polarisation is not only limited to Nepal. See the US for example, Trump’s loss in the Presidential election led to far-right extremists (lunatics, to be more precise) storming the Capitol building. An act which would be seemingly bizarre if it were to happen before the social media era. Yet, given all the shit that spreads around in Twitter, its not that surprising in hindsight. In India, BJP has used its influence in social media to worsen the animosity between the Hindus and the Muslims in the country. Humans have an emotional and societal bondage towards not the mundane, but the extreme ideas, news and events. The social media companies, to their credit, have exactly exploited this tendency to deprecate the minds in our society.

Extremists are everywhere
Always very odd to me when people say Nepalis “regardless of their differences based on caste, culture, or religion, respect each other” when most dark skinned guys from Terai were bullied in every school I attended (didn’t attend undergrad in Nepal so not sure if it was still the case there). Many adults in the neighborhood (including my parents) openly talked about how Muslims were backwards and 2nd tier. Don’t even get me started on caste differences.
This has been a concern for me too. The rising hate among people is really frightening. And deep down I can say this confidently that Nepal will soon see religious wars. I don’t know if this is because of our own politics or the Influence of our beloved neighbors. We always needed a spy agency which could at least identify this threats. We need to protect our land. The bugs are eating it slowly.
Welcome to the club.
Love from India.
No problem if there is religious war!!! Hindus will fuck all and at the same time hindu nation will be established!! Harsh world but the fact that led me to this is” every religion in Nepal except hinduism were ,are extremist since their existence,, and now when only some hindu are becoming extremist and over possessive for their religion.. every other religion’s dalal are afraid of it and making it a big concern……irl there is ntng concerning or to fear for!! Just conversion will dicline!!

Here is the thing – there is no profit to be made when everyone lives harmoniously. Hate divides society and helps the majority tower over the minority. People often say how BJP used the division in the society to become the popular party. That’s not entirely true. They engineered the division – it was obviously not an overnight effort and has been happening for decades. With social media, it is possible to accelerate the division. And your politicians probably just got the budget and the know-how to profit off it in Nepal.
There is nothing you can do about it. The truth is people with no critical thinking and believing everything they see are the majority. And that’s exactly what politicians go after. It has happened in India, it has happened in the US, and it will happen in Nepal too.
Small sample size bhayo bro for the analysis
The older population lack any form of critical thinking. They are easily manipulated and indoctrinated by what they see and hear.
All emotion and no logical thinking.
