Nepal Caste System

Nepal Caste System

Is casteism still prominent in Nepal? Or fading away with the newer generations and overseas?

  1. It is still very prominent, especially in rural communities where Caste-based violence is common, and also not recognised by the State as such. And unlike most people, I don’t think this will ever fade away with the typical reasonings of education or just simple time.

There is deep systematic inequality that breeds violence and hatred; the longer it goes unaddressed and swept under the rug, the more likely it is for that violence to turn into an actual sectarian conflict.

The Caste System will not be eradicated, lest there is economic and cultural upliftment, as well as the elimination of social backwardness. All of which will and is being pushed back on by reactionaries every step of the way.

The powerful don’t want to give up power, unless they are forced to do so, by the fear of violence.

  2. Yeah fading away would be the right way to put it. But there is always going to be some sort of stereotype or characterization associated with a particular group of people as their traditions and culture make them conduct themselves differently from each other. In a melting pot like Kathmandu you will see minimal amount of this caste system in play whereas in villages where population may be few you may still see it a bit, but the untouchability thing is almost gone there as well, just some plain casteism or dare I say ’ pattern recognition ’ lol.
