Hello,
I’m 27. I’m not against playing video games but I’d rather spend my time in something which is fruitful & productive to me. I used to play video games casually till my early 20s. Then I decided to stop as it was a time waste to me. I stopped or tried to stop playing all video games (except for chess).
The issue is after 4-5 months (sometimes more, sometimes less) the urge to play any game comes up and it gets tough to control it. This pattern has been repeating since I tried to stop.
What I think attracts me back to games is not the game itself but the false sense of achievement, the feeling that I have built something, something that I can be good at & show people and the fantasy of imagining myself as the character.
Some examples of my thought process when deciding to redownload the game:
1. Brawl stars/Leagues of legends Wild rift – The fantasy of being the characters, having a profile that shows how good I am with the wins and kills
2. Clash of clans – having a sense of something that I accumulated and in the future look back with fun
3. Pokemon – the fantasy and the sense of accumulating/building something
There’s this clear pattern of wanting to accumulate something that I can look back on in the future.
I tried to control my gaming but when I have them downloaded, my thoughts are consumed by the games. And I end up looking up guides and youtube videos on tips and tricks, etc for hours, wasting my time.
Recently [Strava](https://www.strava.com/) has helped a little. It shows all the physical sports in a game like interface which gives me the same feeling as playing video games.
I really need help with completely removing these urges. If you have any suggestions I’d really appreciate them.

OP, I am a video game addict. The problem you’re describing here is a very serious one. My gaming addiction caused me to drop out of 2 colleges, both in the final year, despite getting distinction marks in my SLC & +2 board exams. Nowadays, I’ve completely failed in life because of my gaming addiction. I have no degree, no friends, no goals in life, no nothing. I only got a small job in a small office due to esentially nepotism, & it’s a 10k a month job; it’s either that or no income at all. My gaming addiction has completely destroyed my life.
OP, I suggest you to throw away all your games before they throw away your life. Remember, gaming addiction is a disease. Study hard & study as much as possible; & watch yourself shine! By that, I mean study hard & get as much marks in board exams as possible, so that you can make as much money as possible. Remember OP, you have to be as successful in life as you can in this day & age. There is no other option. Money makes this world go round. If you have money, you have everything. You never know how much money you’ll need in your life at any point; sometimes, no amount is ever enough! And Video games will eat, eat, eat up your precious money one way or the other.
TL DR; Stop playing games completely or else your life will be ruined by those games. Do you want a good life? Or do you want a completely fucked up life? The choice is yours.
So whats the problem if its not affecting your life? Just enjoy it. If you are gaming without working or studying, thats a different issue. Even still, you can spend your evenings gaming. Who cares?
I had similar addiction. I overcame that by going to 10 days Vipassana medidation. You can try that.
Gaming addict since I was 16. I’m 24 now, I tried leaving gaming because of various reasons in the past.
Right now, I’m still playing but this time, I don’t have any guilt or shame because right now in my life, I’m at my worst. And gaming is one of the few things which gives me joy.
You be you. Do whatever makes you happy. If you want to do something in real life, you need to get out there and start working.
You need to have something bigger in your life than games to truly leave it all. It can be your dreams, your family, your goals, some purpose or anything.
Best wishes!
try picking new hobbies ..something in the creative side.. maybe video editing ,designing …just try learning new stuffs when your minds busy in learning and creating new things itll divert from old habits from my experience… just think that your life is a game itself and your leveling up some skills in that video game
