I work as a telecoms engineer in London. If it works the same there then you’d be mostly rodding and roping, which is sending a rod through the duct under the groun, and when the rod gets through you tie a rope to it and pull it back out. Once you have rope in the duct you tie it to your subducting or cable and pull it through. Other specialisations include using blowing machines to send the fibre down your subduct, and splicing, which is using fancy machines to heat burn the fibre cables together and organize all the tiny splice wires into fancy patterns on a plastic surface full of hooks and stuff for the wires
