Gajalu Le Aankhai Chopne by The Himalayans | Original Song

The Himalayans, a band formed by Nepali-speaking British Gurkha soldiers in Hong Kong in 1974, are featured in this video performing their original song “Gajalu Le Akhai Chopney.” The group, known for hits like “Musu Musu Hasi Deu,” was active until 1981 when some members were reassigned to a UK regiment.

Norden Tenzin Bhutia, who joined the British Gurkha army in Hong Kong in 1971, founded the band with fellow soldiers from the 7th Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Gurkha Rifles. They began with second-hand instruments bought in Hong Kong. Bhutia chose the name “The Himalayans” to represent the shared heritage of the members, despite their diverse regional backgrounds.

The band practiced in their off-hours and initially performed covers at regimental events. Their breakthrough came in 1975/1976 when BFBS Radio invited them to record. They chose “Gajalu Le Akhai Chopney,” written by Bhutia’s friend Arun Thapa. This original track launched them into the mainstream Nepali music scene, leading to the creation of many more popular songs.
