I Couldn’t update for a week but don’t worry, I am not dead or in any trouble, just too busy to write.
I skipped the train to Kolkata because somehow when the day came, I felt like the north-east had more to offer to me than what a few days could deliver. After a few rainy days when I got stuck, and then a few more days when I had too much work, I finally left Siliguri and moved toward Darjeeling.
My honest opinion about Darjeeling is that it does not have as much to offer as the reputation it has. Do not get me wrong here, the location is very good, people are very friendly, and there are some things you’ll genuinely enjoy in the place. But overall, it doesn’t have uniqueness. I could not find anything that was so unique to this place that it would call me back.
With this feeling, I changed my location to Sikim as I heard about Gangtok. Initially, I had a similar feeling about this place as I had about Darjeeling. But as I was roaming about MG Road, I was surprised to see words written in Newari. It was something that was very unexpected for me to meet Newari people in Sikim of all places. They were running a few stalls for the weekly program of Indrajatra.
I tried to understand what was going on, so I talked to the people who were in the stall and they were very wonderful people. I tried the different flavor wines they made, and it was awesome as well. I don’t think the infrastructure or the topography of Gangtok really appeals to me, but this is what I felt missing in Darjeeling. I didn’t have an unexpected experience.
For people who have traveled a lot in Nepal, especially places that are in hilly areas and mountainous areas, Darjeeling or Sikim might not have a lot to offer for you.
Now this brings to me, why might it be that these places are so highly rated despite what I felt here? When you are traveling from the plains of India, hilly regions might be a wonderful place to visit, and even if 1% of the visitors like the place, India is a large place, and places in India will have a lot of visitors, the 1% becomes a large number of people.
I might have had too much expectation for my own good from the number of recommendations I got from people on the internet and other people who I met. But overall if I hadn’t had that unexpected meeting with people, this portion of my travel would have been not much exciting. So from now on, I might be looking towards what the reviews of a place say on different elements and if I am on the same page on the basis of needs rather than if the reviews are good or not.
