So story time, the patient’s wife approached me at the nursing desk and yelled at me in front of so many staffs about her husband about something very insignificant. I froze, standing there with wide eyes and in shock. I wanted to yell back “shut the fuck up!”
I know it’s not professional or appropriate. I wish I did. But then, I didn’t say anything. Which is good I guess. Whatever. It was a crazy busy shift, we were short staffed (again!!) and barely had anything to eat since the morning.
I refuse to let this shit affect me again. Next time I am going to put them in their place, or at least try to. Instead of taking their shit, I will say something back. Something like “I do not appreciate you talking to me like that.” Or “That is highly inappropriate and this hospital doesn’t tolerate verbal aggression.” In a professional or firm tone.
No no one talks about the heart clench, PTSD, disappointment and despair abuse brings. I went home and that stayed in my mind for days and weeks. We don’t deserve that man. No body does.
Healthcare workers are already burnt to the ground. Short staff, burn out pre and post Covid, dealing with deaths and accidents, overbearing seniors, overtime … I am sick and tired of being treated like shit when all we are trying to do is help them. I completely get that you are not in the best place of your life right now, in pain or feeling miserable, but that doesn’t give you the right to treat us or anybody horribly.
It is saddening to see how verbal abuse is so common in the healthcare community. I have been a nurse for 4 years now. I kinda like my job. Taking care of patients in their most vulnerable state requires gut and I am proud of that. But unfortunately we are victims of verbal abuse and harassment.
We are told “not to take it personally” and that “it comes with the job.” And that violence comes with the territory and quietly accept it. Fuck that.

I really feel bad for the healthcare workers but I have also experienced that some, and I mean a tiny fraction of healthcare workers are pretty rude and straightforward with their statements about the patients. I mean it’s not a big deal to them as they have to deal with that shit every day but not all of us normal people can easily put up with how they say things about our dying or miserable family members. The person that OP is talking about may have had that experience before and probably has a misunderstanding that all of the workers are the same. I think the recent violence against the workers is also caused by the small group of healthcare workers who sound like they don’t give a damn about their patients. Just my opinion but I support y’all and I know how stressful your job can really be saving so many lives and you people definitely don’t deserve that kind of hate.
Tldr :A nurse was verbally abused by a patient’s wife. The nurse was shocked and didn’t know what to say. The nurse decided to stand up for herself next time and not take the abuse. The nurse is tired of being treated poorly by patients and their families.
I think the underlying problem is a lack of respect for anyone in general.
After all this, the least we deserve is a fuck ton of money. But there’s not even that.
IMO, most people should try working at customer support and specially the one’s who rage at doctors and nurses

Huge respect to healthcare workers for their composure. I have friends starting their careers as doctors and nurses and understand their challenges with pay and workload. It’s disheartening to see such noble professions undervalued with little action taken. It’s no surprise many doctors seek opportunities abroad.

Our society is corrupt and so is our education system. No discipline, no morale anywhere either that be in hospitals, government offices, or in road(road rage). Patients dont behave well, also doctors/nurses are rude. Actually, we all are a*** holes, just blaming eachother.
