I had the same question a while back. Almost all religions have three parts: 1) Core or the truth, 2) Rituals/Karma kanda, 3) Stories/myth. Rituals and stories are built around the core teachings of the religion. Interestingly, although Rituals and myths vary, the core teachings of many religions are similar. If you want to dive into the core teachings of Hinduism, you can go through Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita (which I am currently doing). These scriptures don’t give much importance to the rituals and stories. Their main teachings revolve around “realization of the ultimate truth or God or aatman or Brahman”. And not around “celebrating Hindu festivals, or doing rituals, or proving your religion is superior to others”.
Knowing what I know now, I have asked my parents several times why they would blindly follow the rituals and not dive into core teachings from Hinduism. They seem annoyed and just want to keep following the rituals. I have stopped asking them anymore, and have been reading these scriptures on my own.

Almost all Hindus are aware of our epics, some puranas, and bhagavada geeta. As to the vedas, yes they seem to be more obscure and less well known.
Read it and you will be atheist. It was written 1000 years ago so most of them are problematic in present day. For eg , some part of Gita is casteist and sexist. I know people will go on mental gymnastics to defend it but read it for yourself and find out.

If you are agnostic, you can still be Hindu because agnosticism is part of Hinduism.
You don’t need to read anything to follow a faith. You just follow blindly.
Hinduism is nit jst a religion its a way of living; so if u r following the way of living of your parents you are following hinduism already!!
