I don’t understand why hard working people are not treated with dignity in Nepal just because they do “certain” type of work.
We had a guy come to our house a few days ago to check the plumbing in my parent’s bathroom because toilet was clogged. My mom wasn’t home so I told him to wait in the living room and I was making tea for myself so I gave him tea as well. He was just waiting in the living toom sitting in the couch.
Then my grandmother and mom came home and they immediately got mad at me for allowing “toilet safa garne manche” to sit in the couch and giving him tea in a normal cup. My grandmother was so mad at me. She was like I should have given him one of the plastic chairs and given him tea in a plastic cup instead of the nice cups we normally use for tea.
I don’t understand what I did the wrong. The guy was wearing clean clothes and he seemed like a normal dude. He looked like almost my father’s age
so I naturally treated him with respect.

Thankfully my parents aren’t like that. Of course they’re a little skeptical of leaving unknown people unattended inside living room. They usually host workers in the kitchen or in the balcony (where most of the work happens) and often serve cold drink or tea depending on the weather.

You did good brother. Our society is so into class based discrimination and racism too unfortunately. If we want to take this country forward, a massive revolution is needed to ensure everyone gets treated with respect irrespective of what they do or how they look.
Just wait a few years brother. Every shit (blatant discrimination by caste, gender, menstruation, dignity of labour) that went around in our house before was reformed after my grandmother died. The new culture forms on the ashes of the old. Just remember to get really mad if your parents try to do the same.

I do the same when such people come.
I try to offer water to the Amazon delivery people but my mom discourages it very much since she hasn’t upgraded her mindset.
Our parents need to reminded we wouldn’t be living this comfortably if they didn’t do their jobs properly or if such jobs weren’t in existence.

This is thing i like about the western countries, people respect each others job because everyone goes through the process of doing job.
Plus people who do physical work are more respected Like Plumbers.

Actually, this reflects the reality with our parents, ‘mostly.’ It’s not even their fault; I believe that in society, education matters, and exposure too. Things like this, including issues related to जातपात & छुवाछुत, are getting better these days, but hopeful that things will improve after our parents’ generation.

I have seen a family that doesnt allow the fohor uthaune truck to make a u turn in their property. “Sahar bhari ko fohor mero agan ma ka lyauna paucha” bhandai. And the truck has to travel quite a long distance in back gear. Tehi ghar kai fohor lina lai matrai tya pugnu parcha
