Hailing from western Nepal, I typically make the journey from Kathmandu to my hometown two to three times a year. When traveling by bus, most, if not all, night buses halt at isolated places where no other hotels are available. This compels passengers to opt for a single expensive hotel that provides unjust services in relation to the charges imposed on customers. Buses gain commissions from these establishments, causing inconvenience to the passengers.
While traveling, I often contemplate the prices of food and other items along the highways of Nepal. Particularly in Dharke and the other bus stops around Dhading, cheating and fraudulent activities targeting normal travelers are at their peak. Without any regard for humanity, they engage in deception, charging even more than Rs 500 for a half plate of chowmein, something the customer is aware of when settling the bill.
I won’t delve further into Dharke and other areas up to RAMPUR Chitwan, as their actions and business practices prioritize immediate gains, forsaking all human traits. Regular passengers, often traveling on a limited budget, face significant difficulties due to these issues.
Such fraudulence is widespread across almost all highways throughout the country. Why hasn’t the government and the concerned authorities taken any action against them yet? They seem to turn a blind eye. Additionally, mainstream media and so-called reputable online newspapers haven’t contributed a single word to this issue.

नेपालको most powerful illegal काम गर्ने भनेकै Transportation Syndicate ले हो। Not limited to where the buses stop for pee, snacks, lunch, dinner. अरु पनी थुप्रै कुरा छन्। For example, kaslai kaha bus operate garna diney, microbus chalauna diney ki nadiney, kun route ma kati wata bus chalney to new a few.
It is a serious problem in Nepal but they’re so far so powerful that noone can touch them. बस हरु पनि डन को नै हो, होटलहरु पनि डनहरु ले नै operate garchhan.
This issue had once come up in the past, but त्यसै सेलाएर गयो।

Let us all be in solidarity against this issue and fight back by packing easy lunch and not eating at these places at all. Please pack boiled eggs, apples, rotis, etc. with cooked foods inside aluminum foils and eat them in front of these people. That’s what I do and I don’t ever give my money to these shops.

I vividly remember a breakfast stop near Vakundebesi last year. My group of four friends ended up paying a staggering Rs 1200 (300 per plate) for a disappointing serving of puri tarkari. The quality was shit, and the food wasn’t even properly heated, possibly stale. To all folks who travel at night from east, Bihan tyo mic bata bolaune vakundebesiko hotel ma khaja nakhaau.

Tbh don’t see a big issue with this. These establishments are in the middle of nowhere and rely on travelers to make money, so some upcharge is expected. Sure, because transport in Nepal is very cartel-like, there is a higher upcharge than you’d expect. But, you can just bring your own food instead, so there’s probably more useful issues to tackle these cartels.
