First, the TikTok ban;
I don’t really care about this ban as I have never been allured by TikTok but from the TikTok business owners perspective, they seem to be suffering and having a hard time switching to different social media to promote their products, since the other platforms don‘t have algorithms as invasive as Tiktok they don’t reach as much.
Second, the tobacco ban;
The ban on tobacco products to be initiated from 27th Mangsir, within Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Is it really the right step to take to „clean the air“? Wouldn’t it be more efficient to just clean the damn city? Will the ban even be effective? I mean, most of the shops would absolutely have a couple boxes of Surya tucked underneath.
Third, the propossed YouTube, Instagram and Facebook ban;
A lot of content creators have said that the Tiktok ban was to have more political power with the traditional government, and since they couldn’t control the narrative, the ban was hammered. I chose to not believe this was the sole reason, as Tiktok is really invasive and I would say, „good riddance“ to Tiktok, but a ban on every social media platform would be straight up a page from China’s notebook, but without China‘s superior economy and development.

If you support the ban of tiktok you support the ban of youtube, instagram and facebook because they all run not so popular versions of tiktok in their app/websites. And theyre not inherently better than tiktok in anyway.

Also the justification that ban was because tiktok was used for hatespeech in my opinion is the equevalent of banning roads because people use it to transport stolen goods.

TikTok ban is not good. Pseudo-intellects are claiming it’s a good deed, but it’s not only the freedom of speech that has gone down, it’s also millions of dollars ( telecommunication companies face a loss due to lower data purchase rate, ISP’s also face a loss if I am not wrong)
The tobacco ban is probably alright. Sudden ban, however, might have it’s consequences, however small or big that may.
Third is an absolute shit move. Even the guy/gal who proposed the thing is an absolute idiot and an asshole.

I think Nepal govt banned Tiktok just as a beginning salvo to test waters and their main aim later is to ban other apps like YouTube and Facebook.. they are already hinting at banning other apps in the meantime like Telegram and Tinder, etc.. they are only waiting for what Supreme Court will say right now because if they say ban of Tiktok is legal then Nepal govt can ban any apps in Nepal.
