All the history I have read was trade and cultural exchange of Nepal with with Tibet which isn’t even 0.5% of the chinese population. Did we historically have trade relations with mainland China?

We had no trade with China but we were considered a suzerain of China as Nepal lost the Sino-Nepal war and had to pay yearly tribute to the Chinese emperor. China basically considered Nepal a vassal state. The war happened because Tibet was also a vassal of China at the time and Nepal went to war with Tibet over trade disputes. China sent a huge army that nearly reached Kathmandu but Nepal negotiated a treaty and we had to pay tribute.
