When I was in the hostel in Silighuri, there was a guy named Shankar. I shared the hostel room with him for 2 days. He was going to Kolkata the day before I had initially planned to go. We had decided to meet in Kolkata when I reached there.
Since he had no cash and only a balance in GPay and had concerns he might need cash on the way, I lent him 2k that I would collect from him when I reached Kolkata. However, due to some last-minute change in plans, I did not go to Kolkata.
I tried to contact him and to tell him to pay the amount in GPay of a friend I had in India. But, I could not contact him at all. Shankar had disappeared. Until earlier today, I thought the guy had taken advantage of my trust and decided to keep the 2k rather than return it to me. I decided to not think about it. That was the reason I did not mention this guy in other posts as well.
Earlier today, I got a call from the hostel caretaker at Siliguri who informed me that Shankar had an accident when he reached Kolkata and is in a state where he is unresponsive. Shankar’s family had come there to pick up his belongings which he had left in Siliguri.
I have some guilt in me for thinking that the guy who is been unable to respond, and who had left his belongings at the hostel with a plan to return in a few days flew off with my couple of grand. And here I am, at midnight, with a beer and a cigarette as my companions, thinking of the things he had said.
Shankar had traveled to 22 states in India with his scooter and had wished to travel to all the states. Before his adventure, he was working with handsome enough pay that he had bought an apartment in Kolkata and was in Silighuri to invest in a hotel. Although he was bickering with her a lot, he was soon to be married to his high school sweetheart. Life seemed good, but a truck hit from behind, and his entire life spun like nothing. He even got tagged as a “chor”. A 28-year-old guy who had his entire life ahead of him planned out is now in an unresponsive state in a hospital with no signs of waking up. But I guess… such is life.
