Smartphone Imports Surge in Nepal in Current Fiscal Year

Customs Department data reveals significant increase in smartphone imports over the past nine months

The import of smartphones in Nepal has witnessed a notable upswing in the last nine months of the current fiscal year, according to data released by the Customs Department.

As of the month of Chaitra, Nepal has imported a staggering 1,391,845 units of smartphones from 61 countries. Notably, the number of countries from which smartphones were imported declined to 61 from the previous count of 68.

China and India emerged as the primary sources of smartphone imports for Nepal, with China leading the way by supplying over 1 million units, followed closely by India with 378,000 units exported to Nepal during the same period.

In terms of monetary value, the imported smartphones account for a substantial Rs 21.75 billion. This marks a significant increase of 16.54 percent compared to the Rs 18.66 billion recorded during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.

Meanwhile, the government’s revenue from smartphone imports saw a parallel rise, totaling Rs 4.04 billion. This represents a notable increase of 16.24 percent compared to the revenue of Rs 3.48 billion generated during the last fiscal year.

The surge in smartphone imports underscores Nepal’s growing reliance on mobile technology and highlights the evolving consumer landscape in the country. With smartphones becoming increasingly indispensable in daily life, this trend is expected to continue in the foreseeable future.
