Just wanted to share my experience while traveling from Kathmandu to Butwal

Just wanted to share my experience while traveling from Kathmandu to Butwal. I needed a data package and had two providers to choose from: NTC and Ncell. I decided on Ncell but faced issues as the network didn’t work about 60% of the time. Upon closer inspection, I realized there was often no Ncell network coverage along the route, whereas NTC had consistent coverage for most of the journey. My suggestion is to consider getting an NTC data pack when traveling on the Kathmandu to Butwal highway.

  1. I always suggest that tourists get the NTC card if they plan to spend time outside the Kathmandu Valley. It’s the governmental network, whereas, NCell is an international corp. The way I think of it is that since I’m here at the pleasure of the Nepal government, I should support them in any way I can. And it works fine in or outside Kathmandu Valley.

There still isn’t phone coverage in many parts of rural Nepal, but it’s getting better all the time. Many people get data packs. They work better due to using satellite technology. I strongly suggest anyone trekking in the Himalayas get the data pack.

If you get a data pack be sure to check to see that your phone isn’t using it when you don’t want it. The card can get used up very quickly. Maybe it was a bot following me around or something, but I think sometimes the phones just turn the data usage on.

  2. I believe route from Ktm to Butwal isn’t rural at any part. Most part of the route passes through residential areas where both SIMs has pretty good network coverage except some forest areas. Don’t know how you faced this issue but getting NTC is still better choice.
