North Korea is planning a crackdown as Kim seeks internal unity

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his top deputies have called for a crackdown on officials who abuse their power and engage in other “unsound and non-revolutionary acts,” according to state , as Kim seeks greater internal unity to overcome a outbreak and economic difficulties.

It was unclear what specific acts were mentioned at Sunday’s ruling Workers’ Party meeting. Some observers believe that possible state crackdowns on such alleged acts could be an attempt to solidify Kim’s control over his and rally them behind his leadership in the face of domestic difficulties.

According to the official , Kim and other senior party secretaries discussed “waging a more intensive struggle against unsound and non-revolutionary acts, including abuse of power and bureaucracy revealed among some party officials.”

Kim directed that the auditing commission’s authority and other local discipline supervision systems be strengthened in order to promote the party’s “monolithic leadership” and “the broad political activities of the party through the strong discipline system,” according to KCNA.

In the past two years, Kim has occasionally called for domestic struggles against “anti-socialist practices,” amid outside concerns about his country’s fragile , which has been battered by -related border closures, U.N. sanctions, and his own mismanagement.

Some experts believe that the North’s increased restrictions on movement in the aftermath of the outbreak will exacerbate the country’s economic difficulties.

admitted on May 12 that the omicron variant of the had infected , and it has since stated that approximately 4.5 million people — more than 17 percent of its 26 million people — have become ill with fevers, with only 72 deaths. Foreign experts widely doubt that this was North Korea’s first outbreak, and they believe that the statistics being released by state media are manipulated to protect Kim’s political position while strengthening internal control and promoting his leadership.

During a Workers’ Party conference last week, Kim declared that the pandemic situation had passed the “serious crisis” stage and directed officials to address “the shortcomings and evils in anti-epidemic work” as well as take steps to strengthen the country’s anti-pandemic capability.
