Now might be a good time for us to launch a independent journalism forum.

I had always dreamed about doing something like what vice and vox had done but in an independent fashion in Nepal. The shitposts and unprofessional-ism of “Independent journalism networks” like RONB has always bugged me. I got into understanding journalism. I want to do something like what Palki Sharma Upadhyay does but through social media handles and in text and picture format.

Rather than for money or fame. Our vision would be to report objective truths with reliable sources. My question is: how can we build this forum of anonymous contributors and have a well functioning organization. How would information verification work?, how can we build this?

Edit: Okay, if you say Palki Sharma Upadhyay is biased and all; I don’t care if she is biased or not, she might very well be. The thing I like about her is the conviction she has in her speech and if she uses it for propaganda, so be it but I want a forum where we use conviction for truth and if you think this is a stupid idea, don’t bother to comment but if you believe we can pull this off I would love to listen from you.

  1. Palki Sharma Upadhyay and objective truths with reliable sources? Bro you gotta be kidding me. So your version of objectivity is ultra-nationalism and vilifying minorities? Got it. So your independent media is basically a right wing echo chamber to counter the left wing echo chamber.

  2. > I want to do something like what Palki Sharma Upadhyay

tyo vanda ta bhai, RONB nai thik 100x

How will you prove the truth you report is objective.

Baru crowd-sourced journalism garda hunxa. Naya platform chaidaina. ki yei subreddit ki twitter ma garda hunxa.

WikiNews ni xa sayad. Jagar kasailai xaina.

Testo mu** sensationalist, nationalist bata inspire vayera ni hunxa. alli sai idol choose garney gara.

  3. There is The Record and i think CIJ Nepal fall under same.

The risk here is, you have to register in suchana/sanchar etc. to be labelled as jornalist. otherwise you will be arrested if you post any controversial.

Plus, people will always prefer chatpatey news like of RONB. actual journalism gets no clicks.

  4. Yeah seems too damn inspirational but after you reach in top and a company offers lakhs for just posting a damn advertisement then no one is gonna back down on that offer. So, it will also turn out to be like RONB.

  5. Check out ukaalo.com

They don’t rely on ads and sponsorships, and is run on donations of individuals. They are one of the few fearless news outlets who are reporting on things without any external influences. Just check out their series of reports on how corrupt Binod Chaudhary made his fortune by exploiting Nepal’s public infrastructure. They are investigating and running stories on how corrupt Lalitpur Municipality and Chiri Babu Maharjan is, while almost all other media just sticks to regurgitate whatever their PR mechanism churns out. I regularly donate to Ukaalo. You guys should too.

Another equally independent and investigative outlet everyone should follow is Center for Investigative Journalism Nepal (cijnepal.org). They are known for detailed investigative reports on big issues and is quoted by almost all mainstream medias in Nepal. They are also affiliated with reputed investigative journalism agencies from around the world and regularly collaborate on global scandals like Panama and Pandora papers. They don’t usually report on current affairs, and focus on issues with deep and long term implications. I’ve known them taking 12-13 months on a single report, that’s their level of diligence.

Also, Palki Sharma Upadhyay is a bad example of independent journalism. While she and WION portrays themselves as new age media different from the Indian Godi media…it’s the same shit in different packaging. A propaganda vehicle for India aimed towards the English speakers. Think of RT or Al-Jazeera. WION is owned by the Zee group and was once headed by the infamous Sudhir Chaudhary. While Palki has left WION, she is doing similar PR pieces in Firstpost. Better examples of independent journalism India will be individuals like Ravish Kumar, Samdish Bhatia and sites like Scroll and The Wire.

  6. Not a bad idea but “independent ” part might not last long.
Basically everything and everyone in this world are biased and influenced by someone.

You might try to run a “neutral” media.

  7. Being anonymous sounds the most difficult. But most of what you’re saying (Vice) just requires good video cameras and investigating an interesting story and conducting interviews. An attractive on-camera host can be helpful too. Doing web-publishing like a website would be more complex, rather than just YouTube videos.

I’ve tried brainstorming about this before, but while I feel borderline expert on US politics…am a neophyte on Nepali politics.
